Former member of the Board of Management of SCHOTT has died

Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Jürgen Petzoldt, a former member of the Board of Management of SCHOTT, passed away at the age of 75 on March 9, 2011. Since he first joined the company in 1964 and until he retired in 1996, the graduate chemist held important positions in research and development, manufacturing and human resources. He was appointed to the Board of Management in 1988. Even after retiring from active duty, he continued to follow the developments at SCHOTT with great interest.

The development of “Zerodur” glass-ceramic as a standard material for the mirror substrates used in large telescopes and “Ceran” glass-ceramic cooktop panels, the most successful product SCHOTT has ever had, are both inseparably linked with his name. He established one of the world’s leading glass research centers in the Otto Schott Research Center in Mainz-Marienborn,

Professor Petzoldt was an internationally recognized authority in the field of glass. He served as President of the International Commission on Glass and Chairman of the HVG (Hüttentechnische Vereinigung der Deutschen Glasindustrie). He was presented with the Golden Gehlhoff Ring, the highest honor that the DDG (Deutsche Glastechnische Gesellschaft) bestows, in 1999 and the Federal Cross of Merit with Ribbon in 2000.

In Professor Petzoldt, SCHOTT has lost an outstanding personality and a close friend. His work was always characterized by a great deal of humanity, comprehensive knowledge and a strong sense of responsibility.
